Sony Xperia Tablet Z: A Review

Although the smartphone market has exploded in recent times, we are now beginning to see a similar level of activity in terms of the design and release of tablet devices. Inspired by the unabated and continuing success of Apple’s iPhone, the current range of tablets on the market is creating a headache for consumers throughout the world.

While brands such as Samsung and Apple continue to dominate across all mobile platforms, however, there are others that have achieved the vast majority of their success in the tablet industry. Sony is one such manufacturer, and with its latest product the Xperia Tablet Z due for release in the second financial quarter, it is the source of much media speculation.

The Sony Xperia Tablet Z: The Specification

With this in mind, it is worth evaluating the Sony Xperia Tablet Z to see whether the product is likely to meet burgeoning consumer expectations. Consider the following:

The Design Concept

Officially launched at the Mobile World Congress press conference, one of the most striking features of the Sony Xperia Tablet Z is it’s core design. Applying a minimalist approach to design, the manufacturers have used polymer, waterproof plastics that also offer a sleek and elegant appearance. The frame carries no unnecessary bulk, and as a results it weighs in at just 495 grams. This is a staggering 150 grams lighter than the market leading iPad device, and this enhances the ease of use and portability of the Tablet Z for consumers.

The Display

Boasting a 10.1 inch screen that is equipped with full HD and a 1,920 x 1,200 resolution panel, the Sony Xperia Tablet Z has adopted a conservative approach in terms of its main display. With a pixel density of 224ppi, however, the quality of the screen falls well short of the standards set of the iPad 4 or Nexus 10. This functional if underwhelming screen is powered by Sony’s innovative BRAVIA Engine 2, however, which is at least designed to replicate the colours and contrast that you would expect from a high performance television.

The Performance of the Sony Xperia Tablet Z

In terms of processing power and performance, the design team behind the Sony Xperia Tablet Z have followed the tried and trusted industry standards. Powered by a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor, the device also comes equipped with 2GB of RAM and up to 64 GB of internal storage. This specification ensures that the Xperia Tablet Z can be easily operated using the high performance Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, with the promise of an upgrade to the Android 4.2 also likely to entice knowledgeable consumers.

The Sony Xperia Tablet Z Camera

Whether you purchase a smartphone or a tablet, the performance of the in-built camera is an increasingly pivotal selling point. The Sony Xperia Tablet Z does not disappoint in this respect, as it features an 8 megapixel rear camera that is powered by the reliable Exmor R mobile imaging engine. Also carrying an illuminated sensor for enhanced image capturing and a front facing, 2 mega pixel webcam with 720p video recording capacity, users of the Sony Xperia Tablet Z can rely on a steady supply of high quality imagery.

The Bottom Line for Consumers

While the Sony Xperia Tablet Z may not push the boundaries of contemporary tablet design, it is at least set to provide a welcome market addition. It is certainly likely to provide a relatively affordable tablet option, with two separate price points of £399 and £499 depending on whether you purchase the Wi-Fi only or 4G model respectively. This compares favourably with the leading Apple and Samsung designs, and therefore creates a viable option for consumers who are looking for a cut-price tablet solution.
